About

About Ladies' Journal

In 1915, the Commercial Press of Shanghai published Ladies' Journal as a general magazine, and targeted women as the main audience until 1932, which was ceased published due to the bombing of the Commercial Press of Shanghai by the Japanese military. The circular places of the magazine covered the metropolis of China and overseas countries, such as Singapore. In modern China, Ladies' Journal are unparalleled in terms of publication duration, distribution area, circulation, readership, social influence, compared to other female publications.

During the publication of Ladies' Journal, it experienced important historical periods such as the May Fourth Movement, peak and decline, as well as the National Revolutionary period; therefore, Ladies' Journal was not only contributing female research but also providing concrete, huge amount and small pieces of primary source in the research of modern Chinese history. However, although the historical value of Ladies' Journal is recognized and widely cited, not many comprehensive studies have been conducted on it, – the catalogs of modern Chinese journal articles in the Shanghai Library, which only preserves the catalogs until December, 1918.

Based on the situation, in 2000, under the leading of Yujiro Murata of the University of Tokyo, several gender historians established the study group of Ladies' Journal. The members of the study group include Yujiro Murata, the professor of the University of Tokyo, Japan; Che-chia Chang, associated research fellow of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taiwan; Yi Yao, lecturer of University of Electro-Communications, China; Hui-chi Hsu, associated professor of Tunghai University, Taiwan; Jungwon Jin, postdoctoral fellow of the Institute of Modern history, Academia Sinica, Korea; Mizuyo Sudo, special research fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japan. In 2001, the study group acquired the sponsorship from the Toyota Group of Japan in 2001 to 2002.

There are two goals of the study group of Ladies' Journal. First of all, the production of seventeen-volume catalogs of Ladies' Journal provide useful guidance and tools for researchers. Second, the study group invited historians from different areas to do general and integral research. In February, 2005, the study group published an essay collection: Ladies' Journal: the starting point of modern Chinese women in Tokyo, Japan. It is worth notice that the study group individually hold conferences for four times, and there were two of conferences hold in overseas areas. Also, the study group and “female and gender research group” of the Institute of Modern History at Academia Sinica, hold an international conference, Ladies' Journal: 1915-1931 and modern China, together on December 19-20, 2003. The result of the conference was the Ladies' Journal special issue of Research on Women in Modern Chinese History. The more excited news is that the catalogs of the study group already acquired the financial support of the Toyota Group, and planned to publish a new book in the SMC book corporation by the end of this year.

In regarding to the establishment and activities of the study group of Ladies' Journal, since Yujiro Murata had given a detailed elaboration in the epilogue of the Ladies' Journal and modern Chinese women, the introduction does not plan to give further deliberation. The introduction plans to give a general elaboration to the process of seventeen volume catalogs of Ladies' Journal and the process of how to access the database system.

For cataloging and proofreading, the study group purchased seventeen volumes of Ladies' Journal micro film through Japanese book stores, which copyright was belonged to the National Library of China at Peking. The study group also references the version of Ladies' Journal, which preserved by the institute of modern history and add up the missing cover pages and advertisements, and then print the materials out for compiling to books (the hard copies of which has been given to the Komaba Library of the University of Tokyo), at the same time, the study group arranged the 17 volumes saved as CD-ROM for preservation.

It worth note that during text input process, the study group considered that there was huge amount of translating articles in Ladies' Journal; however, it is hard to recognize either the articles are translating works or creative works based on judging from catalogs. For example, the category showed Chinese author's name; however, in the context, it showed the article is a translating work or partly translating work, or simply state at the beginning or end of the article that it is a translation, and then state the original author or source. When input the category, we also review the context of the articles. In this situation, the editors add up the author and the original sources. In doing so, it would be easier to distinguish the author of the article and the original sources in order to provide more concrete information. Since this work needs to take time and efforts and it might miss some works some time, the study group welcomes the assistance and suggestion from experts in different fields.

After two-year hard work, the study group finally completed the initial draft and the first edition of the research. Later, the study group presented the research and officially introduced to audiences in the international conference, Ladies' Journal: 1915-1931 and modern China,

in December, 2003. Fortunately, the catalogs of Ladies' Journal and its value acquired the identity of the researchers in the conference. The study group also acquired the support from the Archives, Institute of Modern History, which assist to compile and build up Ladies' Journal as a database in order to feast on the readers. The study group wants to appreciate the great help from Professor Su-fen Liu, the Institute of Modern History and Shu-hua Zhuang, the Director of Archives, Institute of Modern history at Academia Sinica, Mr. Kai-da Chang and Miss Shi-ying Tseng, who provided wonderful suggestions to enable to do more better corrections when the catalogs of Ladies' Journal opened to the publics.

Also, it must point it out, this is the first time, the study group built the catalogs, there are some minor issues or errors in the database. If readers found any error or issue, please correct us without hesitation, the team of Ladies' Journal would love to listen to your valuable suggestions for improving the system.
