Yuan Family Repository of Hand-written Letters from Prominent Figures in Modern China
This collection of letters by prominent persons numbers almost 800. The letters stored in the collection from famous officials and literati living during the Qing Dynasty reigns of Guangxu (1875-1908) and Xuangtong (1908-1909) and other prominent individuals up to the sixtieth year of the Republic of China were collected by Mr. Yuan Xiangtan from three generations of his family's exchanges with friends and colleagues. When the collection was passed to two members of the fourth generation, Xiaoru and Xiaojun, they donated the entire collection to the Institute. As for what letters had accumulated under three generations of the Yuan family, the exchanges mostly pertain to Yuan Shuxun, Yuan Siliang, and Yuan Rongfa, these three family members: grandparent, father, and son. The bulk of the collection is comprised of letters preserved by the third-generation Yuan Rongfa, “The Xuanbing Studio Letter Collection” which occupies more than half the collection. The Institute's mission is to promote research and development of modern Chinese history. Therefore prominent attention is given to the preservation and publication of previously overlooked materials of historical and aesthetic value. Consequently, with respect to the letters from prominent figures preserved by the Yuan family, documents were first selected from the first two generations, that is, Yuan Shuxun's, “Haiguan shangshu Epistolary Collection” and Yuan Siliang's “Gangfa yizhai Epistolary Collection,” which were then brought together and published under the title, Selected Correspondence to the Yuan Family from Prominent Figures in Modern China.
