Nineteenth day of the sixth lunar month

At 7.00 a.m. the weekly memorial service at the C.G.B. Bai Chongxi spoke on the organisation of the Department of Military Instruction and the Review Committee and their work. President Sun Fo told me he had the approval of the Generalissimo for a short trip to Hong Kong to visit his aged mother and so he asked me to issue him with a passport. I went to the Ministry to arrange it. Had lunch at Dr. Wang’s home and spent the whole afternoon there with Dr. Sun Fo. I advised him not to rebuild the Round House as it is situated right in the centre of the bombing quarter. He agreed and we considered the Wang’s Garden in the southern bank as the best quarter. Dr. Guo Taiji said he should like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be removed to the Chongking’s southern bank to be further away from the city and asked me to consult Section Chief Shen. Dr. Wang Chonghui said according to General He Yingqin the Japs would probably make a partial southward drive, i.e., to grab as much as possible in Indo-China and Siam; but our leader was firmly convinced the Japs would attack the Soviet Union.
