Twenty-fifth day of the first lunar month

To Chungking with Wu Shangying. We stopped at Heshangpo (和尚坡) to pay our respects to President Lin Sen. We had quite a pleasant chat with the old man. No one can fail to like him; he is so gentle and kind. Afterwards we called on Ye Chucang to enquire after his health on behalf of the Yuan members. We left at 4.30 and got to Dr. Wang’s at 5.30. Had a long discussion with him over Dai Defu’s case. Because of Dai’s connection with President Sun, I did my utmost to defend him. I do not want any misunderstanding between my chief and Dr. Wang Chonghui. To clear up Dai entirely would be impossible, so I had to agree to his going abroad, I may not be able to follow the many teachings of the old sages, but what Zengzhi (曾子) about dark self-examination. In Chinese saying, I had to be faithful in dealing matters for others, and I had to be faithful to my friends too. I have during all these years, faithfully followed.
