Twenty-ninth day of the first lunar month

At 10.30 a.m. left Chungking with Wu Shangying, Wen Yuanning (溫源寧)[1] and Wang Kunlun who stopped at Geyueshan(歌樂山). Wen Yuanning told us a great deal about Hong Kong. He said there was a rumour some time ago that I might be sent back there to represent the government. I laughed at the idea. Unless he has direct access to the Generalissimo, no one can do well in Hong Kong. There are so many super-bosses who expect you to conduct miracles all the time. Had lunch at Qingmuge and returned home at 3.00. Wen Yuanning stayed at Wu Shangying’s place.

[1] Wen Yuanning(1899-1984) was an expert in English literature and essayist who had studied at Cambridge Univertsity. He was Cantonese and wrote the book Imperfect Understanding.
