Left Chengdu, travelled to Neijiang
Saturday, 30 March
I woke at six in the morning. He Guoguang, Yang Xiaohu and Mayor Yang and others had come to Helu to see us off. After an early meal we left the hostel at 8.30 a.m. Deng, Pan, Huang and others had waited there to see us off at the station outside the south gate. We were really touched. At 9.00 a.m. the car left the station. On the way, the car tyres blew out twice. The second time the tyres blew when we were heading to Ziyang. As it took time to fix we went to the hut of a native to take a rest for a while. The village woman told us that her husband had passed away thirteen years ago and she had brought her son up alone. He was now fourteen years old and studying in school. The school fees were one and a half dollars which was quite a burden for her. From her situation, we can see how hard the living was in the villages. We gave her some money.
At 1.30 p.m., we arrived at Qiuxi station. We lunched there. Then we continued our journey. We arrived at Neijiang at five. The county magistrate had prepared rooms for us at the China Travel Service hostel. Though it was an old-styled building it was quite clean and tidy. I stayed in the same room as Mei Xinru. From the window we saw a lady winking at us. I whimsically asked Zeng Qihui to communicate in eyebrows and it seemed that she reacted. Those who studied the learning of the saints in the past would not dare engage in a clandestine love affair like this. It was a pity that we had to disappoint her.
