From 7.30 until noon at the office as usual. Dr. Wang Chonghui called in the afternoon to tell me of his unsuccessful mission at Dr. H.H. Kung’s this morning. The latter refused to speak to the Generalissimo. He was in utter distress. I suggested transferring Miss Wu to Manila. He consulted Xu, who agreed. So [I] went with Dr. Wang Chonghui to Guo Taiji’s to beg the latter to speak to our leader. I remarked that he should propose that as being for the good of the whole Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prevent a public scandal, and a great many difficulties. We succeeded at last in getting him to take a special trip to Huangshan to see the Generalissimo on that matter alone. I like Guo Taiji for his readiness to help a friend in time of need.

At 7.00 p.m. invited to dinner by Wu Tiecheng. Professor Lattimore and Dr. Young were there. Both are quite pleasant chaps. In fact, Xie Baoqiao had told me of his pleasant interview with Lattimore this afternoon. I think they can work well together.
