Invited Dr. Wang Chonghui, Mrs.Wang and Xie Gengmin, Feng Ziyou (馮自由)[1] and others to lunch at Dashanyuan to congratulate Dr. Wang for losing his job, as he termed it. He meant me only to spend $80 but the result was that I had to pay out three times that amount. However, it was quite a good lunch. To Huang Qihou(黃啟厚)’s. He invited Misses Chou, Chan, Wong, etc. there.  As I had to leave at 5.30 p.m. and they did not arrive until after 5.00 I was not able to enjoy very much of their dancing. President Sun invited me to the Round House. All the army commanders were there. Very interesting reports from them relating to their work at the various Fronts. After they left President Sun asked me to stay on and I had a long talk with him on various subjects.

Germany declared war against Yugoslavia and Greece this morning and the Nazi Army began their invasion. Hitler, as usual, made a long statement putting the blame on these two unfortunate, weak, Balkan States. No matter what he has to say, no one can doubt that these small nations are the victims of Hitler’s suppression. Hitler’s speech, as well as his promises, have no more value, to any fair-minded man. [Cordell] Hull put it quite well when he said “The barbaric invasion and the attempt to annihilate that country by brute force are but another chapter in the present planned movement of an attempted world conquest and domination. Another nation has been assaulted by the forces of aggression and it is a further proof that there are no geographical limitations or bounds to aggressors’ movement for world conquest.

[1] Feng Ziyou(1881-1958) was a politician who was born in Japan and was associated with Sun Yatsen when he was young. He was a native of Nanhoi, Guangdong.
