Fifteenth day of the sixth intercalary lunar month

At 7.30 a.m. Xu Mo told me that the Generalissimo has agreed to allow Miss Wu to proceed to Australia and she will then leave for another place. Guo Taiji has had a difficult mission and our leader consented only after much hesitation. Madame Chiang was very much against her. He (Xu Mo) seemed very much relieved. When later, Guo Taiji told me of the result, I said he had saved two persons from ruin and they ought to be grateful to him forever.

Dr. Wang Chonghui asked me to have lunch with him with Xie Baoqiao. When I got there he talked about Baoqiao’s work with Lattimore and afterwards confided to me the task of studying the many legal problems (and political) for the future peace conference as instructed by the Generalissimo. He wanted me to head one of the four sections. In fact he has had the approval of our leader, so I have to accept as gracefully as I can. He has learnt Guo Taiji’s trick to get people to work for him “by order of the leader”.
