From 8.00 to 11.00 a.m. the Yuan meeting. Owing to the absence of both the President and Vice-President, I took the chair. I have influenza but had to go through with it. Fortunately for me there was an air raid alarm and few members spoke much and the meeting was able to finish at 10.30. As expected I was asked to make an address on foreign affairs and spoke for half an hour. In spite of my fever (about 102 F) my speech was regarded by all as quite satisfactory. My fever ran up to 103 F in the afternoon. Dr. Li decided it was influenza and advised me to stay at Dushiqiao for a least a few days. But how can I do so with all my work piling up in Chungking? I am afraid that, like the Kaiser, I have no time to get sick.
