I received a telegram from Fanny saying Jintu (Fu Jintu, 傅錦涂)[1] has been seriously ill for over a month and was staying in Chongqing. The money I left has already been used up. Consequently, I have to reserve an extra 100 dollars for her every month. I immediately cabled Section Chief Chun Junsu to process accordingly, then sent a reply to Fanny. Probably the newly-born daughter was difficult to raise and Jintu was ill. I could imagine how hard up Fanny was. She is a frugal person, and the money I left behind was quite substantial. She has now cabled for more and she must have some great difficulties. I was worried about her for the whole day. As the poem by Bai Xian Shang went “I have already known the pain of being a guest, but being poor at home is worse than it.” He was very right. After I had met Fanny, I found that I had true love. When I thought of the bitterness of separation I still felt painful. But firstly because I had to take the responsibility towards the Party and the country, I had no choice but to come to the Soviet Union. Secondly my mother was old and we were poor, if I didn’t come this time, the expense of relocating my mother would be impossible, also I had to borrow the money for Fanny to give birth to the baby and Jintu’s illness. I felt very bad too. Even though Fanny was in such a bad situation, I was sad that I was unable to be with her and give her consolation. I happened to see Fanny’s “300 Tang Poems”, then I recalled the scene when we stayed at our home at Dushiqiao and she was about to give birth to Jintu. At the time, I still forced Fanny to memorise two of Du Fu’s  poems as “Zeng Weibachushi”and “Jiaren”, until Fanny said she felt pain in her stomach and then we stopped. Now Fanny and Jintu are in difficulty and I am far away from them. I didn’t know when we would be together again. I felt very sad and my tears were streaming down. Du Fu’s poem “Man has tears but he does not shed during separation”. I was sorry that I was unable to do so.

In the afternoon, Military Attaché‎ Guo Dequan invited the other embassies, military attaché‎s, and the staff of the Soviet Government to a tea party in the Grand Hotel. They all came, especially a lot of people from the Soviet Government. This proves that the Soviet Government is friendly to us.

In the past few days the Allies have scored landslide victories in North Africa and I speculate that the war there will end soon.

Ambassador Wei Daoming (魏道明) replied to my telegram saying that the American Government was trying to be in touch with the British Government to mediate the Soviet-Poland incident, hoping that they would be able to resume their diplomatic relations, but it was not yet definite.
