The Political Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has passed the armistice of the Korean War with fifty votes to seven. There were five principles which were included. After the armistice, the committee would be organized immediately (to include the Chinese Communists, the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union) deciding on the various issues of the Far East, including the participation of the United Nations General Assembly of Taiwan and the Chinese Communists. This proposal offers a great deal of concessions to the CCP, yet still the Soviet representative opposed it, which is enough to prove that the Soviet Union is unwilling to end the Korean War. Therefore, I felt concern that the CCP might not accept the proposal.
Duan Guanhai phoned me to say that the daughter of Li Xiaosheng (李曉生), Li Kan(李侃), died from illness several days ago. She shut the door of her room and did not allow anyone to enter. Therefore, the landlord only discovered her death several days later. Now her body has been removed by the French government. Therefore, Duan Guanhai discussed with me about sending a telegram to Li Xiaosheng. I agreed. But Duan Guanhai said that if the French government demanded that the body should be buried immediately, what we could do is decide the matter for him and handle the burial. Li Xiaosheng originally had two daughters and both studied in France. During the war his elder daughter passed away and the younger was in dire financial difficulty. The younger daughter was driven insane by the various blows. The year before last she was in hospital for several months. Li Xiaosheng asked me and Jiang Yongzhuang to take care of her to leave the hospital. I urged her to move to a small hostel. But as she wanted to be frugal she moved back to her home. Later her illness deteriorated and led to this tragedy. It was really a great misery.
