I studied Russian from 11.30 to 1.30.

In the evening Vice Military Attachés Shi and the two Zhou(s) invited us for dinner at the Embassy. At 10.30 I went to the farewell banquet of the Head of the British military delegation, Burrows. I left at midnight and I did not join in the dancing. Afterwards I learnt that it did not end until 5.30 in the morning.

The American magazine Newsweek published news from the end of September, saying that China proposed the issue of treatment of Asian peoples in the Conference of Dumbarton Oaks, but that the other three powers refused to discuss it. It also said that Roosevelt did not want to return Vietnam to France. Even though returning it to France, France should regulate its duties to the Annamese. But Churchill firmly refused this motion as he feared that it would affect policies of the British colonies. Churchill was still steadfast about his dream of the Great British Empire. In the future, if world peace cannot be maintained, this ultra-conservative policy of Churchill’s should take full responsibility.
