I studied Russian from 11.30 until 1,30.

Chairman Chiang reported in the People’s Political Council. With regard to diplomacy, he said we should strengthen cooperation with Britain and the United States and further our friendship with the Soviet Union. China has tried its best to advance a close connection with the Soviet Union. This is not only necessary for both countries, it is also necessary for the Allies to defeat the invaders. The Chinese Government has already removed obstacles to friendship between the two countries, and he hoped that Sino-Soviet relations would improve. With regard to the issue of the Chinese Communist Party, he said the Chinese Government has always tried to solve this problem by political methods, but the basic main point is the unification of China as well as the unification of law. The Chinese Government has adopted the most important core requests of the Chinese Communist Party, and it has accepted the suggestion of Lin Biao (林彪)[1] with regard to the administrative area in northern Shaanxi. Now what only remained was the military question. The Central Government has allowed them to be formed into 10 divisions. If they were too numerous, they could make them into 12 divisions but he hoped that the army would not expand freely and not take in other armies besides the formal army. With regard to their ammunitions and wages, the Central Government would treat them equally as with other armies.

I received a telegram from Jinpei, saying that they needed to evacuate from Lizhou and asked me to remit money to her. I immediately cabled Section Head Chen Junsu, asking him to remit US$500 to Bingkun and to cable him and tell him the money was for his evacuation, Jinpei and others, and asking him to inform Jinpei that she needed to go with Bingkun. During the escape time Qiongfang and Jinpei were still ignorant about the importance of staying together with other family members. It made me feel pain.
