Monday, 29 April

I received a letter from Secretary General, Zhang Qun, saying that he had relayed the letter of appointment from President Chiang that I would be a national policy advisor to the president. This is what I had wished and I certainly felt delighted. It is because I think I am absolutely not suited to take up an actual administrative and diplomatic works.

In the morning, Liu Kai came. I talked with him about the appointment. He said he had learnt of this from Shen Changhuan, yesterday, and that he really thought that I deserved a better post. I said that I really did not think so because I am already 63 years old and my spirit is not as good as before. If I was responsible for actual work I confessed it would not have a good outcome. On the contrary, I feel much happier and I have more freedom from this honorary post with no responsibility. I went out to have lunch with him at the Grand Hotel. We met Mr. Zhang Qun and Mr. and Mrs. Li Dijun by chance. So we had lunch together. I returned to my hotel after lunch.

In the evening, Yu Hanmou invited me for a banquet at his residence. Commander Huang Zhenwu took me back to House of Freedom.
