I attended the Memorial Week service at the Nationalist Government headquarters. Minister He Yingqin reported on the war situation in Northern Hupei, saying the enemy had dispatched its [634 and 13 Divisions, unclear] to rush into the outskirts of Changsha. Our armies were also grouped together to combat them. The enemy had 110,000 soldiers. Although we cut its return route, the Japanese armies were really numerous. If our army could stand for three more days then the enemy would not be able to break our encirclement and we would have a chance to win, as the enemy had great problems with provisions and ammunitions after its advancement. In the past few days, the news from Changsha has been awfully worrying, and the enemy even circulated that Changsha had fallen.
