The Polish Ambassador has arrived at Kuibyshev. He originally planned to leave here today, but it happened that his elder brother has just died here, so he will stay here for one or two days to sort out the funeral arrangements. I sent him a condolence card and he sent a Counsellor to return thanks. According to what he told Counsellor Liu, Britain and the United States are trying to do their best to mediate affairs between the Soviet Union and Poland. The Soviet-Poland affair may still have hope. (I reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately.)
In the past few days the Soviet newspapers have published articles by Poles, which attacked people around General Sikorski for being anti-Soviet, but did not touch on him. In this case, if the Polish Government can be reorganised, then the tension might be eased. But the Polish Foreign Minister Raczhinski is strongly anti-Soviet, and the anti-Soviet lobbying of former Financial Minister Matushevski in the United States is also quite powerful. Although both the Minister of Propaganda, Kot (formerly Ambassador of Poland to the Soviet Union), and the present Ambassador, Romer, advocated cooperation and coming to an understanding with the Soviet Union. But I do not dare to say if this will make Sikorski determined to put great efforts, into reorganising the government. I thought it was unwise of Poland to raise the issue of territory at the moment, as Poland is unable to regain their own territory and at the same time they make trouble for those who could take it back on their behalf. Probably the Polish have lost their country for so long and the people in power have no experience. They are just young and impudent and Poland is without the power of a big country. Still it behaves as if it is a big country. Beck has committed this mistake and is thus losing his country. Now those in power repeat the same error. I feel very sorry for the Polish people.
This morning I walked for one and a half hours with Military Attaché Guo Dequan. Guo Dezhong (郭德忠) will be back in China, so I asked him to take letters to more than ten people including Jiang, Wu, Sun, and mother.
