Fine

I studied Russian in the morning.

In the afternoon, I went to the American Embassy to watch movies. The Canadian Minister Wilgress said Prime Minister Mackenize King’s outright criticism of the British imperialistic policy by Prime Minister Churchill and others was unexpected by him. He long knew what Mackenize King advocated, but it is admirable that he spoke like this before Churchill and Smuts and others in London.

I received a telegram from Minister Song on 12 May, saying that he hoped I could correct the rumours from Britain and the United States from time to time. He said our mood for resistance is still the same as during the last seven years, the heroic war in central Henan is evidence of this. It is rumoured outside China that we have amassed material given by the Allies to us for fighting the Communists. We should try to refute this. Up to the end of March this year, with regard to Allied material which was not brought East of Kunming and was directed to other places, 50% went to Claire Lee Chennault’s 14th Air Force, 20% to Joseph Stilwell’s troops, with only 10% left for our expeditionary force. The Chinese Communist Party is purely an internal political issue and we should try to solve it politically. The Communist representative Lin Zuhan should come to Chongqing to negotiate. Economic and political issues will be discussed at the 12th Plenary Conference.
