Saturday, 22 May

At noon, I invited the Afghanistan Ambassador Ahmed Khan, The Norwegian Ambassador Andvord, The Minister of Fighting France, Garreau, the Canadian Minister Wilgress, and the American Charge d’Affaires Perkins and others for lunch at the hotel.  Originally, I wanted to wait until the furniture from our Embassy in Moscow arrived, but it has already been two months now and most Ambassadors have previously invited me, so I had no choice but to invite them to the hotel. Actually, the place and food were bad.

Davies, the American President’s representative, saw Stalin last night and also handed him a long letter from Roosevelt. They talked for two and a half hours. Davies told others that he was merely the messenger, and did not take part in the discussion. After Stalin read the letter, he was in a good mood and said he would reply in a few days and asked Davies to take it back to the United States. According to German propaganda, the content of the letter was that it tried to persuade the Soviet Union that it should abstain from showing political commitment to other European countries, to avoid unnecessary difficulties. It cited Finland, Poland, the Balkan States and Turkey as examples. It exhorted the Soviet Union to dissolve Comintern, in order to avoid people suspecting that the Soviet Union would try to control the world through ommunism.

Pravda of Moscow announced today the resolution of dissolving Comintern. The main idea was that before the Great War, the Comintern had experienced difficulty in unifying and coordinating the labour movements in various countries. During the war, the things labour should do in the Axis’ countries were different from those in the Allies’ countries. Furthermore, some branches suggested the dissolution of the Comintern. So the Central Executive Committee passed the resolution that the Comintern would be dissolved, and all the branches should be freed from their responsibility to the Comintern according to the Communist Charter. It also tried to advise the Allies to support, and members of Comintern to help their countries fight Germany and its allies. This was very important, as it related to our country. It was also evident that the Soviet Union wanted to reveal its attitude as there were fears outside that the Soviet Union would use Communism to dominate the World. The Soviet Union should have done this earlier, but even now it is still very good.

Last night I had a good dream. I dreamt of gathering together with Mar. L. Life here is humdrum, and having a good life here is not easy, so I record it here. Perhaps when one was young, he would dream that he could reflect a lot when he was old. I think always of the past recently.  Perhaps I am already old and I feel sad.

Tomorrow Counsellor Liu will go back on orders from the Generalissimo, so I have asked him to take letters to Fanny, mother, Bingkun, Bingyi (Fu Bingyi,傅秉彝)[1], Qiongfang, Jinpei, Baoqiao, (and asked Liu to give US$1,000 to him),,Wu Shangying, Tianjuan, Lou Tongsun, Yuanru, Kejun, Ruchang, Long Renrui, Bai Chonghui, Sun Fo, H.H.
