Clouds, windy, cold

Today was the Afghanistan National Day. Its Ambassador gave a reception in its Embassy. Canadian Minister Wilgress talked about the recent diplomatic reports of Eden and Churchill. He also thinks that the recent British-Soviet relationship is quite worrying. He also said the Soviet Government’s attitude is very unreasonable. Ambassador Kerr also implied that things are thorny here. The representative of the American Red Cross, Hubbell, has recently returned from Cairo and Iran, and talked about what happened there in detail. When our Red Cross was touched upon, he and Kerr both lamented the resignation of Dr. Robert Kho-Seng Lim (林可勝).[1] Kerr said that Lin resigned because Wang Xiaolai[2] (王曉籟), Du Yuesheng (杜月笙)[3] and Dr.C.T. Wang did not like him.

[1] Robert Kho-Seng Lim (1897-1969) was a medical expert trained at Edinburgh University.

[2] Wang Xiaolai (1886-1967) was a wealthy Chinese businessman and banker active in Shanghai.

[3] Du Yuesheng (1888-1951) was the leader of the Chinese Green Gang.
