S.H. Hsiung told us that some one had asked him whether we are ready to sell the restaurant. Both Kitty and Zhongxiong want to sell it if the price offered is over ten million francs. I explained to them the folly of giving up a business which we have worked so hard to build up and which at least assured us of our living. But I did not insist upon my view and said I would agree if they are keen on it. I realize now the hopelessness of keeping such a family together and the best way out is for me to leave them to their fate after giving them the amount satisfactory even to them.

Duan invited Zhongxiong to lunch to discuss about storing some of our furniture at the Embassy. He urged strongly my return to Taiwan and said he was willing to go into partnership with Zhongxiong in opening a new Chinese restaurant in London. I told Zhongxiong what Xie Renzhi (謝然之)[1] told me about Taiwan and how my friends there wanted me to return, but that I have not decided yet and shall consult my whole family soon.

[1] Xie Renzhi (1912-2009) was a journalist and politician.
