Sunday, 11 December

Dull, rain and warm

I woke up early and studied English.

I did not learn that Zhongxiong had left for London until I went to the restaurant.

The Sunday Observer has published that the British foreign minister, Macmillan, had considered that with regard to Britain’s Near East policy, Britain and the United States should have a fundamental change.  They should provide ample assistance to the economic backward countries in the Near East and Asia. And the Baghdad Pacts should change from military to economic unity. Such policy of countering the Soviet Union not only needs the resources of Britain and the United States, but even the various smaller states should cooperate as well. Therefore, during his visit to the United States next month, Anthony Eden and Macmillan will raise the issue to the American President. But inside the American government there are important elements strongly opposing such a suggestion.

Khrushchev gave a speech at Sprinagar, which heavily criticized Pakistan. It was perhaps too much.

Professor Chen Shouyi said that Li Zongren had written to the American Department of Defense recently, saying he had an important plan to discuss with them. He asked the department to send its people to talk with him. The Department of Defense replied, asking him to go to the Department of Defense in Washington to talk. When he arrived, the American side unexpectedly sent a field officer to meet him. Li Zongren was extremely angry. Can Li really be as foolish as this? I do not really believe it. Perhaps it is exaggerated.
