Sunday, 26 May

Guo Dequan came to talk about the destruction by the people of the American Embassy the day before yesterday. He said for the side of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Ye Gongchao reported to the President in the morning of that day. Then he immediately got the order from the President that he should instruct the army and police to try their best to press, so as to avoid accidents. Ye immediately phoned to inform Garrison Commander Huang Zhenwu and the Gendarme Commander Liu Wei (劉煒), as well as the Head of Police, Le Gan (樂幹). They agreed to go to there on their own. Unexpectedly, they did not show up afterwards. Ye also phoned to notify Chief of General Staff, Peng Mengji, but it was of no avail. Guo witnessed what actually happened so that he also felt that for the side of policemen. In the first instance they were absolutely not working hard on the matter. Guo was afraid that people outside would misunderstand that there was an inside story. If this was the case the matter would deteriorate even more. On this matter, I thought that President Yu and Minister Ye handled the situation quite well. It was a pity that the police were unable to mediate in the morning so that people took such action. But I thought that the matter would not be enlarged further.

Mr. Chen invited Zhongxiong and others to have lunch at Yinwo. Therefore I invited Dequn to come too.

In the afternoon Bao Dedeng came to chat. Tan Baoshen also came. The wife of Huang Guangpu’s nephew came. She told me that I could go to the banquet at Judicial Building early. I went there with Baoshen. Many people, including Minister Gu Fengxiang of the Judicial Administration Department, Mrs. Wang Chonghui, Shi Shangkuan, were present. Someone said during the banquet that the facts of Liu Ziran’s case were that Liu had been selling  smuggled goods on behalf of Robert G. Reynolds for a long time. Robert G. Reynolds killed Liu at this time because he suspected that Liu was pocketing the money, and not because Liu peeped into the bathroom when Robert G. Reynolds’s wife took a bath. Bao Yuanru also heard about this story. After dinner, Shi Shangkuan took me back home and stayed to chat. He did not leave until 10:30.

I received a letter from Kitty. She said she did not want to stay in Paris for a long time. I gave the letter to Zhongxiong to read. Zhongxiong sent flowers to Paris to celebrate Jeannie’s birthday. From this one can see that he cannot bear to part with her. He is foolish to still love her. I would certainly not interfere any longer.
