The Hungarian new government has declared war on Germany. The Hungarian capital was encircled by the Red Army and the Red Army dispatched two military officers to urge the German army to surrender, but the German army killed two of them. In this war the Germans have committed atrocities everywhere, and do not abide by wartime international war, in particular in the East line. This act of killing envoys reflects the Germans reckon their days are numbered.

At 7.30 p.m., we had a banquet for the staff and their families in the Embassy until midnight. We celebrated the coming of the New Year, drank champagne and played a lottery game. At 12.30 I went with Qin, Hu and Qian to the Metropole Hotel to join the Diplomatic Corps celebration.
