Duan Guanhai visited me.  He said Kang Liwu told him that Clark-Kerr broke with Chiang was because he [Clark-Kerr] had advised him not to use H.H. Kung and Song Ziwen. I thought Clark-Kerr had overrated himself.

A spokesman for the US Department of State, Ballantine, has released statistics to show that the Communists in Western Europe have decreased as compared to two years ago as follows: i) France decreased by thirty per cent, now it only has 600,000 followers. ii) Britain by thirty-four per cent. iii) Belgium by sixty-five per cent, Italy by thirty-eight per cent. Western Europe originally had more than 4,000,000 communists, but now there were only 2,700,000 followers. The United States communists are also reduced by forty-eight per cent, Denmark by sixty-three per cent, Luxemburg by eight-four per cent, the Netherlands by thirty-four per cent, Sweden by forty-five per cent and West Germany by thirty-four per cent.
