Pravda stated that the Soviet Union ordered to abolish the prohibition of abortion on the twenty-third of last month. The prohibition was proclaimed during wartime. As a matter of fact, prohibition of abortion is merely a religious and superstitious concept. Also, the policy has been adopted sometimes because a country feared that its population would be inadequate.

The Political Committee of the United Nations General Assembly passed that it would allow eighteen countries to join the United Nations. Chiang’s representative declared that the National Government is against such a decision and would exercise its veto power in the United Nations Council. The American side felt really very embarrassed about this. Eisenhower had sent two private telegrams to President Chiang Kai-shek and urged him not to insist on his decision, but it did not yield any result. Regarding this matter, on the one hand, it was a blunder made by the United States, on the other hand, the National Government has handled such a matter with great foolishness. As the Soviet Union raised the suggestion that the eighteen countries would all join the United Nations, and the majority of countries had agreed; there was no point for the American side to raise opposition to Outer Mongolia for joining. But at the same time, the United States declared that it would not exercise veto power, while urging its friendly states to vote to support it. Such hypocrisy of the United States makes it unworthy to be the world leader. As for the side of the National Government, at the moment it is dependent on the assistance of others for its own survival – and in the United Nations it is able to sustain its status by also depending on the voting of the South American group. Its status is like a “poor relative” and yet it still wants to be self-willed. (I thought) finally it would be unable to resist the pressure from the American side and give up, while as the South American group was eager for the participation of Spain and Italy that they had the suggestion to summon a special meeting to pass the resolution first. The Chinese communists joined the Council of United Nations. Though it might not implement the action of expelling the representatives of the National Government, one could see its attitude. Also, at the moment it has turned the most friendly nations of the National Government such as Spain, Italy, Japan and various states in South America, into enemies. Those in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs really do not know what is happening. It is really miserable.
