Madame May quit her job today, leaving behind a letter. She thanked us for treating her well and left her address. In it she said that if we need her she could work for us again. But as she is like this so repeatedly we do not dare to employ her again.
Zhuohui wrote to me, saying Huiming has given birth to a daughter. Both are fine. I am very happy.
The former American military administrator stationed in Germany, General Lucius D. Clay, announced in the Senate that if the Soviet Union sees that its preparations for war are ready, it would start a war before long. By the end of this year, military hardware in Western Europe would be powerful enough to stop the Soviet invasion. He advocated helping Spain, Turkey and Greece to reorganize their armies. He also highly praised the rejuvenation of France.
The Soviet Union has accepted the suggestion of western countries to have a Fourth Conference of Foreign Ministers, and is discussing an agenda for the conference. The Soviet Union will also send its Deputy People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs, Gromyko, to participate.
