Wu Shangying said the Generalissimo reminded him yesterday to cable Sun Fo, asking him to return to Chungking as early as possible. Therefore, I immediately cabled Sun Fo for him. This morning from 7.30 until noon I was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to handle official administration. I received a letter earlier from Second Sister[1] with regard to the matter that Wu Qingpei (伍慶培)[2] would move to the United States to study.
This morning the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that Wu would be a second-class trainee in the Chicago Consulate. At 4.00 p.m. the American Ambassador, [Clarence] Gauss, came to visit me with his First Class Secretary. This was the first visit so we did not talk much. At five o’clock I visited Minister Guo Taiji. He showed me the secret telegram Gu Weijun had sent him and reported on his meeting with Eden in detail. Eden agreed to add the Yunnan-Burma Road to his warning to Japan.
At seven, I had supper at Wang Chonghui’s. I returned home at 9.00 p.m. Zhou Qigang and Guan Suren came to talk. They left at eleven in the evening.
