At 5.00 in the afternoon the American naval Commander Trolly brought his newly-wedded wife (formerly Miss Hadda) to see my foot ailment. He also brought two packets of American biscuits. Both of them were my favourites when I was in Shanghai. I haven’t had these biscuits for a long time. When I got them I was like a child with a present. Sigh! Mrs. Trolly was a Soviet, but she could speak English quite well (She had lived with his father in London for many years.) Mr.Trolly had stayed in China for many years.

I talked to Attaché Hu with regard to learning methods. I urged her to continue to learn Chinese and English besides Russian.

The Central broadcast said that Shi Ying (石瑛)[1] and Chen Tiaoyuan (陳調元)[2] died. Since the war many comrades have passed away. I felt very sad.

[1] Shi Ying (1879-1943) was a veteran revolutionary from Hupei.

[2] Chen Tiaoyuan (1886-1943) was a senior military leader in the Nationalist Government.
