Snow, cold

The editorial of The Times commented on the resignation of the Polish Prime Minister Mikolajczyk, saying that the Polish exile government shouldn’t drive a wedge between Britain and the Soviet Union so as to buttress itself. The British Government repeatedly and clearly told the government that Britain could not help it on anti-Soviet (activities), and Poland could only cooperate with the Soviet Union. Recently the exile Polish Government proposed Britain and the United States guarantee its independence, but the British and American Governments said that they could guarantee this together with the Soviet Union. But the Polish government requested that besides the guarantee from the three countries, it needed the guarantees of the British and American Governments individually. However, the British and American Governments are unable to do so. Now Prime Minister Mikolajczyk has resigned because his cooperation policy with the Soviet Union is unable to be implemented, and in this way the method of solving the Soviet-Polish problem has been blocked. The British broadcast also talked about the Belgian condition, saying the riot in the Belgian capital and the shooting of police the night before last was because of differences between the exile government and the anti-German elements within the country. Probably all the anti-German elements are unwilling to be ruled in the German-occupied areas, but they are also unhappy with the old rulers from 1939. Also the exile government is in close touch with great industrialists and capitalists, and these industrialists and capitalists were collaborators, therefore the people who fought against Germany hate them very much in particular. All in all, people are extremely opposed to returning to the conditions of 1939, and they demand reforms which are good for them. Earlier Britain wanted to restore the former conservative governments, by now it must know that it is impossible. In this sense, Britain should change its national policy. I always thought the only hope for the world was Britain gaving up its imperialistic conservative and anti-reactionary policy and progressing towards enlightenment, and the Soviet Union gave up its extreme communism and the policy of converting other countries and progressing towards Socialism, then the third world war can be avoided and humans will have peaceful times. The relations now aren’t extremely bad, and they can still be mended now. Otherwise they are unimaginable.

I received a telegram from Qian Tai. He said that French policy was inclined to Britain on the rRght and Soviet Union on the Left, with the aim to become the fourth power. It imposed itself as the intermediary between Britain and the Soviet Union. Britain advocated organisation of the Western European group, which includes Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Norway. Because of opposition from the Soviet Union for this, France has had difficulty joining. France hoped that besides a British-French coalition, it could also enter an alliance with the Soviet Union, which would make it have no clear inclination. This time although De Gaulle visits the Soviet Union, though officially it is said that it is merely a visit in nature, but he heard that there was a possibility that Francewould forge an alliance with the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Foreign Ministry asked Shaozhou to come to their office and file a protest, saying the Soviet Consulate at Ili has been shot many times, as well as bombarded, and the Deputy-Consul was injured and died. Also some were wounded. At the same time Chinese soliders climbed the wall of the Soviet consulate Administrative Office. They asked our side to stop them from doing so. Shaozhou told me that this proves how difficult it is to change the personnel in Xinjiang. I reckon that all these are done by the old factions, whose aim has been to hatch a conspiracy to arouse dislike of the Soviet Union to China.

In the evening we organised a farewell dinner for Shaozhou. I also declared on his behalf the engagement of Jingchen and Shaolan and that the wedding ceremony would be held this Saturday. People were greatly surprised.
