At 4.30 p.m. the French Ambassador, Garreau, visited me. He was fairly dissatisfied that recently the South African Prime Minister General Smuts gave a speech in Britain saying that in the future France could not be regarded as a big power. He also told me that the French Committee is now completely united. Giraud and his close associates have withdrawn, allowing the politics and administration to be united. The French army roughly numbers 500,000, but the ammunition is only enough for 25,000. He said he visited me to congratulate me on our success at the North Africa Conference.
