Fine, fairly hot

Adenauer won a great victory at the polls yesterday. His party, the Christian Democrats, received 45.2 per cent of the total vote and they hold 244 seats out of 487 while his rival party, the Social Democrats, got only 28.8 per cent of the vote and hold 150 seats.

President Truman said yesterday that the world is now entering upon a period of negotiation. I agree with him.

Mr. and Mrs. Wei Daoming invited to lunch at the Hong Kong restaurant. Mr. and Mrs. Duan, Xie Baoqiao, Mrs. Liu Tsin Chang, and one Mrs. Zhu were among the guests. Wrote post cards to Dr. Wang Chonghui, Wu Shangying and Dr. Sun Fo. Signed jointly with them. Soumay told me that after this tour to Europe, they may go back to Taipei and she urged me to do so also.

Qian saw John E. Fobes this morning and learnt from him that he could not get any of his American friends to take over our house yet. Felt very bad. I hope very much that I can sell my house and go to Taipei.

Business very good today. Receipts of over 55,000 francs.  I read Cheiro’s Palmistry again.

Letter to Jinpei in reply to hers of 26 August, which told us of her birth to a baby girl five weeks ago.
