Wednesday, 10 January

In the afternoon, I went shopping with Kitty and Zhongxiong.  We returned home by bus at seven.

I received a letter from Li Shufan, asking me if another world war was likely to occur very soon as he had intended to come to France but Song Ziwen advised him against it. Also, he said that Huang Qiang told Li’s younger brother in Hong Kong that Hong Kong was safer than Europe. I thought it was laughable.

The maid, Madame Leroy, has not come to work since yesterday. Probably it is because we reduced her working hours. Kitty and Chengyong both said that they could tidy up their own rooms, therefore we employed a washerwoman in the first instance and will decide several weeks later what to do.
