At seven-thirty in the morning I went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has rained over the past few days and my roof is leaking. I moved my bed three times last night. Li Wenfan said that when it has been raining for several consecutive nights one’s roof leaks. It was really bad. It happened that I forgot to take covers for my shoes so my legs and feet got wet. When I arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs I needed to change my shoes. It was quite laughable. I received a letter from Phillip Tyau, saying with regard to Dai Defu’s case, all the indictments were not found. I certainly believed Dai Defu would not engage in embezzlement, and now it is emphatically proved that what I believed was right. Li Zhuoxian wrote that Ah Gu[1] has opened a small restaurant in Hong Kong, which has air-conditioning. The waitresses employed are all female students. They are required to wear uniforms. She got married to an unsuitably wrong person, and is very miserable.

At noon, I returned home. Li Dugong came to talk. He has been transferred back from Guilin on the Generalissimo’s instructions. Probably he will work in Headquarters or receive the American Military Delegation. He said Li Jishen was absolutely hopeless. Li himself is without much intelligence. He cannot use good people yet he got rid of bad ones at the same time. Li Dugong came again when I returned home from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He stayed in the hostel and we talked happily. In the evening, Ma Chaojun came, saying that it was circulated widely outside that Song Ziwen had telegrams saying that in the America-Japan negotiations they had forced us to make various concessions in the four provinces in the Northeast and Outer Mongolia. I told him that was certainly not true. Britain and the United States would absolutely not betray us at this moment. He said the children of Sun Fo and Wu Chaoshu did not behave well. It is true that in well-off families it is not easy to produce good children.
