Miss Tan and Mrs. Liu came to lunch. She told us a great deal about conditions in Hong Kong – and our relatives and friends.

Received a reply from Dr. Cheng. He will not be able to come to Paris this year. He approved of my plan to remain in Paris.

[Genevieve] Tabouis wrote that if the Geneva Conference bears result the United States agrees to the Indian government taking up the question in the General Assembly of the UNO for substituting the representatives of the (unclear) Representatives with those of the Chinese Nationalists [sic.] The American Government, though herself voting against, has during the last few weeks urged her friends on the five continents to vote favorably. In order to prevent too great an incident in Taiwan, Eisenhower has very secretly asked his envoy to make the necessary arrangements with Chiang.
