Minister Guo Taiji told me that he had received a telegram from Hu Shih with regard to the matter that the United States intended to come into a three-month provisional agreement. The telegram was quite lengthy. The agreement was something that we feared most, so we were in agonies. The Generalissimo was also quite anxious. We immediately discussed methods of how to handle it. The Generalissimo cabled Hu Shih. I also urged Guo to cable Hu Shih, telling him this was having a bad effect on China, and asked him to try his best to make the United States abandon such thought. Because of this situation, I was unable to sleep all night.
