[Kitty hallucinates; not available online, one paragraph]

Kitty is in no mood to listen to reason. She told everybody about what the kid said regarding the old woman next door. Zhongxiong consulted me and suggested he take Victor to Sartrouville with him.  I agreed.  Kitty felt very badly the whole day.  I think she must have cried several times.

Alsop wrote that in the summer of 1945 the US Joint Chiefs of Staff cabled General Wedemeyer proposing that General Stilwell land from Okinawa on the North China Coast, possibly on the Shandong Peninsula to make a junction with the local CCP forces. Stilwell was a professed admirer of the Chinese Communist movement, so this J.C.S. proposal was tantamount to an American declaration of war on Chiang Kai-shek. Alsop suggested to General Wedemeyer that he answer the cablegram by inquiring whether the Joint Chiefs really meant to go to war against Chiang. That shows how much we could depend upon our Allies in those days.

Chen Xiongfei came with Gong of the Sino-American Airline. Invited them to lunch. Gung resigned from his post and is now on his way to New York to run the restaurant called “Rice Bowl”. He felt extremely bitter towards the Americans of the company. They are very inefficient and there is practically a total change of personnel every year. No Chinese, however able, can hold a high position. Practically all the Chinese co-pilots are much better than the American pilots. The morale is very bad. Such is Sino-American cooperation!
