Twenty-second day of the twelth lunar month

Deputy Minister Yu Hongjun (俞鴻鈞)[1] invited me to lunch at the Jialing Hotel. Zheng Jiemin (鄭介民) talked in depth about how Soviet agents function. I asked Deputy Minister Yu to take care of Fu Huimei (傅惠梅)[2]

At 6.00 Wang Shiming (汪世銘) invited me to go the Bureau of Foreign Affairs’ guest house. At 6.30 I went to the dinner upon an invitation from Mao Jianshuang (繆劍霜). Miss He, Mrs.Chen and Mrs.Dong (?) were there. They were all quite pretty and could certainly drink. I was pleased that a certain Mrs[3] drank for me. At 7.30 I went to President Sun’s dinner. As I arrived late, I was asked to drink three glasses of wine as punishment, and was immediately drunk. I also had a terrible headache. After dinner, we talked about the diplomatic situation. Sun Fo said recently, Professor Nicholas John Spykman of Yale University had written “America’s Strategy in World Politics” (N.Y. Harcourt Brace & Co. l942), which aroused many discussions about all United States’ society. He suggested using Germany to counter the Soviet Union and Japan to counter China. He was afraid that within the military and the United States’ Department of Foreign Affairs there were a section of people who thought like this. There were only two ways for the Soviet Union to offset this imperialistic policy. One was pro-China and the other was to compromise with Japan. So with regard to this possible adversity, we should come to an understanding with the Soviet Union.
