CHUANG TSIN, B.Sc. (Arch-Eng.)
莊俊字達卿
(Chuang Chun)
 建築師。
 一八八八年生於上海,原籍浙江寧波
,爲莊鴻授公之哲嗣。
 莊君爲一九一○年庚子賠款委員會所
派,第二批留美學生,一九一四年畢業
 得意利諾大學建築工程科學士學位。
 囘國後,一九一四至二三年任北京淸
華大學駐校建築師。一九二五年在滬開
辦建築師事務所。
 莊君爲第一個留學建築師。曾設計建
築銀行多所,如上海及漢口之金城銀行
;哈爾濱,大連,靑島,濟南之交通銀
行;漢口之大陸銀行等皆是。又如上海
南京路之大陸商場;北京淸華大學之大
禮堂,圖書館,體育館,工程館,科學
館等;天津之扶輪學校;上海之交通大
學管理大廈;上海長安路(前大西路)
之婦科醫院及其他住宅房屋等,不勝枚
舉。
 因在淸華大學建築各項工程,一九二
一年政府特授莊君五等嘉禾章以酬勞績

 由一九二六年起歷任中國建築師學會
各屆會長及董事,一九二○至二一年中
國工程師學會董事;一九二八年起爲中
國科學社永久社員;一九四一年上海淸
華大學同學會會長及意利諾大學同學會
會計。
 莊君爲採用「建築師」名詞之首創者
,又爲中國建築師學會創辦人之一,並
譯成建築學上應用術語之華文,今已公
認爲標準。
 一九一○至一四年留美,以求深造;
一九二三至二四年再行赴美遊歷,並領
導淸華大學學生一百人;一九三六至三
七年作環遊世界之旅行。

 Architect.
 Born at Shanghai, June 6, 1888, of
Ningpo ancestry, son of late Chuang
Hung-Shou.
 Mr. Chuang went to United States
for his higher education with the
second batch of Tsing-Hua students
on the Boxer Indemnity Fund, 1910,
and was graduated from the University
of Illinois with the degree of
B.Sc. in Architectural Engineering,
1914.
 Returning to China, he was appointed
Resident Architect at Tsing-
Hua College, Peking, 1914-23. He
established his own Architect's Office
in Shanghai, 1925.

 Mr. Chuang was the first Chinese
graduate in Architecture to return
from abroad. He designed new bank
buildings: namely, the Kincheng
Banking Corporation in Shanghai and
Hankow; the Bank of Communications
in Harbin, Dairen, Tsingtao, and
Tsinan; the Continental Bank in
Hankow, etc. Also the Continental
Emporium on Nanking Road, Shanghai;
the Auditorium, Library, Gymnasium,
and Engineering and Science
Buildings at Tsing-Hua College,
Peking; the Railway Schools at Tientsin;
the Administrative Buildings of
Chiao-Tung University, Shanghai;
the Women's Hospital on Great
Western Road, Shanghai; and numerous
important residences.
 In recognition of his architectural
work at Tsing-Hua College, Mr.
Chuang received the Chiaho Decoration,
Fifth Grade, from the Chinese
Government in 1921.
 Served as President and Chairman
of the Board of Directors of the
Society of Chinese Architects for
eight years at various times since
1926; Director of the Institute of
Chinese Engineers, 1920-21; has been
Life Member of the Science Society
of China since 1928; President of
the Tsing-Hua University Alumni
Club in Shanghai, 1941, and Treasurer
of the Illini Club, Shanghai, 1941.
 Mr. Chuang was the first to use
the Chinese title "建築師" for
"Architect;" was one of the Founders
of the Society of Chinese Architects
and translated most of the Chinese
architectural terms which are now
standardized.
 Visited the United States, 1910-14,
for his higher education; second visit
in 1923-24 on furlough when he was
placed in charge of one-hundred Tsing-
Hua College students; made round-
the-world trip, 1936-37.
